SCHOLAR LEADER MEETING MINUTES 10/24

- Congrats to everyone for participating in all of the Homecoming Week activities! As a community, we participated in every single event/ contest offered so that is something to be proud of. We earned the most amount of points possible for the blood drive. We made it to the semi-finals in flag football and were the last co-ed team in the league. We had so many people come together to help with decorations for the Hall Decorating contest and ended up with a great display (random people were taking pictures in front of our M)! Though we did compete for a win, we did not win the overall Most Spiritual contest (though we probably took second).
- We do not have the results from the Homecoming game attendance, though we had well over 65% of our buildings show up! Great job supporting Miami and Scholar Leader!
- On November 7 at 1:00, Operation Smiles is putting on a volleyball tournament for teams of 4-6. This is an organization that raises funds for people with cleft lips and pallets. Email Sammi Boyer if you would like to register to play for Scholar Leader.
- This Monday at 8:00 is a Coffee House! It is with Dr. Amani (sp?) who is a botany professor (and Ellen's favorite teacher). He plans to speak on the civil rights movement here at Miami and will offer a lot of insight. Come if you can!
- Optimist Club will be running a Toys for Tots campaign to collect donated toys for children in Over the Rhine. They are looking for volunteers and support. Charlotte Freeman will be sharing more about how Scholar Leader can get involved, but email her if you have any suggestions and would like to help.
- RHA has lots of funding to go towards halls and on-campus programming. If you would like to offer a petition, you can submit that or schedule a time to present an idea to the exec board. Jim Millward is on exec board and is the Stelliot Liason, so go to him if you have any questions/ complaints or things you would like to change. Melanie Rybar is also the Stelliot rep, so see her if you have any questions about the community or buildings.
- Jamie Newman wanted to remind everyone that the construction between the buildings is beginning tomorrow. Watch for tickets if you have been parking your car there; they probably will be more prone to getting you in trouble if your car is in their way.
- Caitlin Troyer is a part of African School Advancement Program and they are looking for new members. They meet every other Tuesday at 8:00 in Shriver. They organize a month long trip over the summer to teach English in a school system. Also, they do on campus fundraising/ awareness. Currently, they are collecting empty/used ink cartridges to raise money for school supplies for the children. If you have any, look for a box in your lounge to put them in.
- Plunge Update! Since we have been discussing power and privilege, the committee decided this would be a great opportunity to extend our learning and apply our understanding of the subject. Therefore, the theme for the trip will be power and privilege. There will be different events that deal with this topic on the trip.
- Recruitment Update! The recruitment team is hoping to have every Scholar Leader play a part in the recruitment process. They have come up with three expectations for each member. Everyone should do the first (if applicable) and then choose between the second and third option.
1. Talk to your organizations about Scholar Leader. There will be a formed email coming out on the listserv that we will ask each person to forward to their listservs that they are a part of.
2. Participate in an info session. Tentative dates are November 2, 3, 9, and 10 at 7 in various locations. *November 2 is a coffee house that will also serve as a meeting. This will be a "bring a friend night" so you can bring a prospective applicant. Email Joyce Lin if you would like to help
3. Take responsibility to update on a Scholar Leader blog about one week. You will receive further information about sign ups for the weeks and the blogging process.
- Saturday 10/30 is a park clean up opportunity from 11-1:30 in Hamilton. This is a place where lots of kids go to play, but there are major safety issues that need to be taken care of (i.e. broken glass). Email Raven Jones if you would like to help.
- Saturday 10/30 Jack is going around Hamilton to different thrift stores for his Halloween costume. Let him know if you'd like/ need to tag along.
- Jean sent out an email earlier about Relay for Life on April 2. Email her if you would like to help raise money and participate in the event. It is carnival themed so it will be a lot of fun!

Kudos to everyone for their participation/ organizing of Homecoming Week!
